Want to Playback DVD’s on SLED?
September 22, 2007 · Leave a Comment
Come on, you know you do. It’s the last thing besides Call of Duty 2 that keeps even a single instance of Windows anywhere near most real techies.
With this article, you’ll know how to hack OpenSUSE 10.x, which translates pretty neatly into hacking SLED 10, including some information that might get you in trouble with the various bloodsucking, erm, umm, legal types.
Read at your own risk, and enjoy that DVD, hmm?

I won’t post the guys site, it’s nothing that I would be going to anyway, but you can read about it without viewing the site or driving this idiot’s hits up. Besides, I can’t visit the site, I use Adblock and Firefox and refuse to load IE of any version for any reason.
The whole deal is that advertisers have GOT to understand that I and many others will refuse to visit sites with those damned pop-up ads that obscure part of the screen, or the ones that blink and move, or at the very WORST the ones that have music or sound in them. Just the other day I hit a particular site with a non-Adblocked browser and some pop goop blasted out of my speakers (which had been turned up, my fault, for a fragfest on COD2) and scared the crap out of me and the poor dog, snoozing nearby.
You know, like the line from Field of Dreams “If you build it, they will come”, site owners need to understand that “If you build it crappily, with annoying ads that try to wring every bit of concentration out of your visitors, they’ll quickly find other sites to visit”.
Nuff said.

“Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead”
Microsoft’s so-called “Get the Facts” site trumpeted long and hard how well Windows compared with Linux for TCO, at times making almost fantastic claims about how inexpensive Windows was compared to a totally free product like Linux.
In what could be a sign of a kinder-gentler relationship with Linux, Microsoft recently took this decrepit site out back and drove a stake through it’s heart.
The site has been replaced by a Windows Server Comparison site, much less controversial and flame-worthy.
R.I.P., or as my co-worker commented: “R.I.H.”

Like back when Frank Zappa said “Speed was cool until the Republicans got into it” or something to that effect, there is a new FF extension that reproduces an XGL-like effect only on Windows Boxes. Additional features include bugginess, instability and crashes, so it follows the usual MS Development Guidelines, apparently.

3. Microsoft’s partnership with Novell actually works for customers–everyone else hates it. Say what you will about the nuances and motivation of the Microsoft and Novell Linux pact, but it does touch on a key theme–mixed source environments are here to stay. Proprietary code such as Microsoft’s is going to coexist with Linux. No CIO is going to rip out years of infrastructure for open source religion. The reality: CIOs want some reassurance open source software and proprietary code will play nice. Microsoft’s deal with Novell plays to that need. If Novell gains any business–I’m doubtful since Novell has more lifelines than I can count–perhaps Red Hat and Microsoft also do some sort of interoperability agreement.

Damn, they did it… We all knew there were these 70,000 subs for MS to hand out to customers, but seeing them use them, and for such large customers, it’s shock and awe…
